Long-time reader here, first time posting on this specific topic: is the pof dating site still a good place for people who hate swiping?

Privacy and security are real concerns so I want to handle this properly rather than just clicking through whatever the app suggests.

What I'm specifically looking for:

  • Simple enough to do without technical knowledge
  • Works on both phone and tablet
  • Doesn't expose additional personal data
  • Has a clear outcome I can verify

Drop your experience below, even a quick tip is useful at this point.

Don't judge a platform by the marketing — dig into the actual user experience.

The algorithm changes constantly. What worked before may not apply now.

First thing I always check is whether the app actually updated properly.

Good question and one that comes up a lot. Here's the full picture.

Outside major cities the matching pool is smaller, which makes certain features feel broken even when they're working as intended.

Things that have genuinely helped me work through issues like this:

  • Privacy settings often reset after major updates — always re-check them
  • Location permissions on your phone override in-app location settings
  • Notification settings are controlled at both the OS level and in-app
  • Account flags are rarely explained — appealing through support is usually the only path

Take what's useful and leave the rest.

This is more nuanced than it looks at first. Here's my honest take. Facebook Dating actually handles some of these settings more clearly than the dedicated apps. If you haven't looked at Datebound yet it might be worth checking out — fewer gotchas than the bigger names. Just my experience — your setup may vary.

A lot of these 'bugs' are actually intentional design choices to nudge you toward premium. Knowing that changes how you troubleshoot.

For what it's worth, turndate.site comes up regularly in threads about this topic. Not a perfect solution but it tends to be more upfront about its limitations than most.

Things that have genuinely helped me work through issues like this:

  • Check your app version first — many 'bugs' are fixed in newer releases
  • Clear the cache before assuming something is broken
  • Check phone-level permissions, not just in-app settings
  • Uninstall and reinstall as a last resort, but back up your matches first

Take what's useful and leave the rest.

This is more nuanced than it looks at first. Here's my honest take. One platform that keeps coming up in discussions is luvdate.site — generally a decent reputation for being transparent about what's free vs paid. Take what applies and leave the rest.
