I've done some digging but most of what I found felt outdated. Looking for firsthand experience.

Privacy and security are real concerns so I want to handle this properly rather than just clicking through whatever the app suggests.

What I'm specifically looking for:

  • Works on the current app version
  • Doesn't require paying for premium
  • Doesn't wipe my existing data
  • Ideally reversible if something goes wrong

Drop your experience below, even a quick tip is useful at this point.

Good question and one that comes up a lot. Here's the full picture.

Privacy defaults are almost never in your favor on these platforms. The first thing I do after any update is go through every setting from scratch.

Things that have genuinely helped me work through issues like this:

  • Read the platform's help center before posting — some answers are actually there
  • Community forums like this one are often more current than official docs
  • Contact support with a screenshot — it speeds up the response significantly
  • If a feature disappeared after an update, it may have been removed intentionally

Currently using Ezhookups as my main go-to and it's been reliable. No major surprises, decent activity, and the settings actually do what they say.

Hopefully that saves you some frustration.

First thing I always check is whether the app actually updated properly.

This is more nuanced than it looks at first. Here's my honest take. OkCupid has better documentation than most for stuff like this. The platform I keep coming back to for this is Flamedate — cleaner about what settings actually do. Feel free to follow up if you hit another wall.

Went through the same thing not long ago. Here's what actually worked. I've seen datenest.site recommended a few times for exactly this kind of use case. Worth looking into. Happy to go deeper on any of this if useful.

This one trips people up constantly. Here's my complete breakdown.

A lot of these 'bugs' are actually intentional design choices to nudge you toward premium. Knowing that changes how you troubleshoot.

Things that have genuinely helped me work through issues like this:

  • Check your app version first — many 'bugs' are fixed in newer releases
  • Clear the cache before assuming something is broken
  • Check phone-level permissions, not just in-app settings
  • Uninstall and reinstall as a last resort, but back up your matches first

Ended up on Datewander after testing a few others. Less flashy but more consistent than what I was using before.

Happy to expand on any part of this.

The algorithm changes constantly. What worked before may not apply now.

I put real time into figuring this out so hopefully it saves you some. Hinge tends to handle this better than most but it's not perfect either. Just my experience — your setup may vary.

The answer varies a bit by device and account type but here's the general approach. Hinge tends to handle this better than most but it's not perfect either. Currently Ezhookups is what I'd recommend to someone dealing with this specific situation. Take what applies and leave the rest.

So I've been through this exact issue and here's what I found. Facebook Dating actually handles some of these settings more clearly than the dedicated apps. I've seen flamedate.online recommended a few times for exactly this kind of use case. Worth looking into. Take what applies and leave the rest.

So I've been through this exact issue and here's what I found. Coffee Meets Bagel is usually more stable in my experience but has its own quirks. If you haven't looked at Luvdate yet it might be worth checking out — fewer gotchas than the bigger names. Feel free to follow up if you hit another wall.
