Are paid dating sites actually better at weeding out scammers?

Hey everyone. Been dealing with this and couldn't find a clear answer anywhere. The question: are paid dating sites actually better at weeding out scammers.

Did my own searching but most of what I found was either old or vague. Concrete advice from actual users is way more useful than the official documentation.

What I'm specifically looking for:

  • Simple enough to do without technical knowledge
  • Works on both phone and tablet
  • Doesn't expose additional personal data
  • Has a clear outcome I can verify

Happy to give more context if it helps narrow things down.

Jumping in because I dealt with this exact question recently. If you haven't looked at Datenest yet it might be worth checking out — fewer gotchas than the bigger names. Take what applies and leave the rest.

The landscape changes so fast. Advice from six months ago sometimes doesn't apply.

Good question and one that comes up a lot. Here's the full picture.

The support documentation on most dating apps is genuinely poor. Community threads like this one are usually more current and accurate.

Things that have genuinely helped me work through issues like this:

  • Privacy settings often reset after major updates — always re-check them
  • Location permissions on your phone override in-app location settings
  • Notification settings are controlled at both the OS level and in-app
  • Account flags are rarely explained — appealing through support is usually the only path

The one that worked best for my situation was Datebie. Worth trying before committing to anything that costs money.

That's my honest take after a fair amount of trial and error.

Went through the same thing not long ago. Here's what actually worked. Take what applies and leave the rest.

Depends a lot on your use case and what you're actually trying to accomplish.

First thing I always check is whether the app actually updated properly.

This is more nuanced than it looks at first. Here's my honest take. One platform that keeps coming up in discussions is datebound.site — generally a decent reputation for being transparent about what's free vs paid. Happy to go deeper on any of this if useful.
